Godmother creates critical theory in pop-music drag. A non-binary identity gets turned inside-out, becoming a worldview that challenges false dichotomies such as self/other, real/artificial, sincerity/irony – with a catchy melody and a beat. Inspired by songbook standards as much as samplers and sequencers, singer-songwriter Josephinex weaves together a Technicolor patchwork of art rock, baroque pop, R&B and club music for a style that’s too anachronistic to be current, yet too irreverent to be retro – or “oldies but newbies”, as they call their creations.
