Weightless, produced by Aaron Dessner (The National) and Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear), is Gold Lake’s sophomore album, where they amplify their ability to fuse nuanced sonic landscapes and rich poetic lyrics—though leaving the listener with a sense of intimate immediacy, wondering at the vista before them. According to Spin Magazine, Gold Lake are “Majestic” and they “sound like the stuff of Divine Inspiration”. Clash Magazine says, “Gold Lake are arresting from their name alone”.
Shortly after releasing their debut album, Years, mixed by Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes), and amassing brilliant reviews from Spin, Stereogum, Clash, among others, Gold Lake’s personal life took a dramatic turn, Carlos’ sister passed away unexpectedly, leaving them absolutely devastated. This led to some serious health issues of their own with long treatments and awake brain surgeries.
After this long journey through the desert, Gold Lake wrote their second album and went to Long Pond Studios to begin the recording the album with Aaron Dessner. With the pandemic grinding everything to a halt, Chris Taylor took over the production duties, finishing the recording in Spain and bringing Chris Bear on to play drums, and McKenzie Smith contributing drums on their most personal song. It was then beautifully mixed by Phil Ek again and mastered by Ted Jensen.
The result is Weightless, an album which is a personal and musical resurgence.
