Golden Rules the Thumb. That’s the name, but what is it?
It’s a band. It’s an ensemble. It’s a studio-focused rock/pop band.
Well, who is it? Tyler Jackson and Jonas Eule. But it’s not a two-piece. They are the constant members—twin engineer/producers—who rely largely on the talent of friends to make the stuff come to life. In Portland, Maine.
The language of the band? Shortish songs with both warm and bright sounds, simple and dynamic structures, melodic hooks, and restrained playing. Guitars animate the songs, while drums, keys, strings, and vocals color the compositions.
The new album, Licorice is like a Turner sky: luminous with brush strokes of longing, vulnerability, and wonder. Recorded and produced at their home-built studio, the sound is clean and sumptuous, and the group stretches stylistically, touching drone, country, and roots with splashes of harmonium, tenor saxophone, Moog, and harmonica. And for the first time, Tyler Jackson and Jonas Eule appear in a cover photograph, perched on stone beside water framed with foliage. The focal point of the image may be the cover of Wings’ Wild Life, both photographs expertly capturing The Essence of the Enterprise. In this case, reflection.
Will you adore Golden Rules the Thumb? Their music seems saturated with goodness, and the hits keep coming . . . pop beloved.
