"Maybe nobody actually likes being told that their art "embodies all of the contradictions of its age," but with a band like GOOD JOB., who specialize in anthemic dirges equal parts introspective and propulsive, it's hard to know where else to start. Their album The Taste, which according to frontman Mikey Perez was intentionally recorded "as fast as possible," reads like a slow-burning litany on the eternal pas de deux of loss and self, all set to electronic drum patterns as densely intricate as they are danceably repetitive. Yet from the stage the songs glow riotously with a morally conscious kind of bombast, one that presses the sonic power of a rock band into the service of earnestness and vulnerability. Look, it's got big chords, memorable melodies, triumphant choruses - you could do much better in your own head (and believe that if you do get to see GOOD JOB. live, you will). But the thing that makes them truly special, more than technical mastery of the performances and even more than the sunny and welcoming dispositions of the band members themselves, is all in the name. Because the stories these songs tell are suffused with death - meeting it, beating it, even needing it - but by pure force of will, their lament is transfigured into celebration. I call that a GOOD JOB."
