When my daughter was very young, she had a wonderful little school friend named Fatou. I knew Fatou and her mother from birthday parties and school functions and her mother was the sweetest.
One day in first grade, I picked my daughter up from school and she told me that Fatou moved to Senegal in Africa, with her aunt, because her mom died. I later found out it was cancer, but you never would have known she was sick based on meeting her.
It weighed heavily on me for months, and as I thought about Fatou having to leave her life in New Jersey unexpectedly, I wrote this song.
It took me a long time to finally record and release this one, but here it is.
Fatou, if you’re out there somewhere, your mother’s spirit lives within you and I dedicate this to you.
