Gula, based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, combines psychedelic music with doom and metal, while also including calmer and atmospheric passages. The lyrics are inspired by movies, literature and philosophy. The bands name refers to Gula, the Mesopotamian goddess of healing.
The band consists of Ilja Fase, Jan Bleijenberg and Aad Oliehoek (ex-members of HeadSmoke) and Pieter Dirksen (also in Compact Star). Ilja and Jan formed Gula in 2015, Aad joined in autumn 2016 and Pieter in spring 2018.
The band released their self-titled debut album in 2018. The album was recorded live on a 24-track tape recorder, mostly on a single day, in the LGM Studio of Chris van Velde.
".. This album takes us on a trip through six inhospitable, sonic landscapes, each of which has a wonderful, versatile composition. .." --Lords Of Metal (September 2018)
