This disco-rock floor filler, "Tühjad pihud" (tr."Empty Hands"), has become an anthem for every Estonian who's ever felt empty-handed, displaced, or wronged. The song tells the story of an artist who gives their all while others take what they can. Appearing on vinyl for the first time, this track is a main pillar of Gunnar "The Ironman" Graps' discography, showcasing the wide spectrum of genres he covered, from beat music to funk, disco, and rock.
His band, Magnetic Band, even won first prize at the Soviet Union's first-ever "official rock festival," "The Rhythms of the Spring" in Tbilisi (1980). Their success garnered international attention, including a full-page feature in The Washington Post in 1982, which praised their unique sound and Graps' charismatic stage presence.
While Graps enjoyed immense stardom in the 1980s, the 1990s sadly fulfilled the song's prophecy for "The Ironman." Like many other creatives, he struggled to adapt to the changing times. The pain expressed in the song became autobiographical for Graps, who passed away in 2004 from a heart attack. However, "Tühjad pihud" continues to be a release valve for creatives who experience the fleeting nature of success and the profound personal cost of a life dedicated to art.
