HALF MOON

In life, it seems that nothing is truly one thing. That is the crux of the music of 26 year old Coloradan producer, songwriter, and musician Chase Church, whose hazy beats and whirring synths depict a sonic world steeped in ambivalence and nostalgia. The feelings that Chase expresses in his songs are never two dimensional, with his songs ‘know you better’ and ‘memory wipe’ expressing bitter heartbreak, but still feeling undeniably longing and loving.

Chase was only 11 years old when he first started out in music production, making <a href="spotify:artist:6LqNN22kT3074XbTVUrhzX" data-name="Kesha">Kesha</a>-inspired synth pop songs about simple pre-teen subjects like hanging out with friends and having big dreams. As he grew into himself as a producer, Chase was deeply inspired by the world of ‘chillwave’ music by the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:6O4EGCCb6DoIiR6B1QCQgp" data-name="Toro y Moi">Toro y Moi</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:5juOkIIy18sFw9L30syt1Z" data-name="Washed Out">Washed Out</a>. At the same time, he was listening to a lot of experimental electronic artists such as <a href="spotify:artist:4SQdUpG4f7UbkJG3cJ2Iyj" data-name="Arca">Arca</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:6kBDZFXuLrZgHnvmPu9NsG" data-name="Aphex Twin">Aphex Twin</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:6nB0iY1cjSY1KyhYyuIIKH" data-name="FKA twigs">FKA twigs</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:5a2w2tgpLwv26BYJf2qYwu" data-name="SOPHIE">SOPHIE</a>. In more recent years, he came to enjoy jazzy indie rock/pop bands such as <a href="spotify:artist:3zmfs9cQwzJl575W1ZYXeT" data-name="Men I Trust">Men I Trust</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2SdK1QDmZIP2hk94rSaLl9" data-name="TOPS">TOPS</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:2sSGPbdZJkaSE2AbcGOACx" data-name="The Marías">The Marías</a>.

Pulling from all of these different sonic worlds, he creates nostalgic, synth heavy indie pop with generous dashes of jazz and R&amp;B, though he is not hesitant to write music in many other genres. When asked what kind of music he makes, Chase usually responds with “I do what I want.” And from hot trap beats drenched in overdrive to warm, lush, ambient music, his musical expression knows no bounds.
