Halfway was formed in 2000 by John Busby, Chris Dale, Elwin Hawtin and Ben Johnson in Windsor, Brisbane. QLD. Dublin-born brothers Noel Fitzpatrick and Liam Fitzpatrick joined in 2002 and the lineup was rounded out when John Willsteed and Luke Peacock joined in 2010.
The band have released nine studio albums, all of which have received numerous awards and accolades. Over time, they have developed their own unique style of Australian storytelling, combining indie rock, folk and country music, and have built a career around heavily themed albums.
'The Styx' (July 2025): "With The Styx, Halfway have delivered one of their most complete artistic statements - emotionally resonant, musically adventurous, and deeply rooted in the landscape of memory. it's a record that rewards slow listening and repeated returns". Nick Corr - Rhythms Magazine.
‘On the Ghostline, with Hands of Lightning’: (Sept 2022) "Ghost nets floating lost at sea are the core image as the band trap the power of memories and sing of Australian dreams and triumphs”. Tony Moore - The Sydney Morning Herald.
‘Restless Dream’ (Sept 2021) is a collaboration with Indigenous Elder Bobby Weatherall. It is based on his 30 years of work in repatriating indigenous remains and artefacts from around the world.
Both albums have received widespread critical acclaim. ‘Restless Dream’ was nominated at the 2021 ARIA Awards for ‘Best World Music Album’.
