Happy New Tears is a DJ, producer and performing artist of Zambian and Dutch heritage who operates across multiple genres including, but not limited to, ambient, trance, hardcore, neo-pop and deconstructed club music. As her name implies, her musical output blends a range of emotions and aims to find the turning point between euphoria and rage or the moment celebration turns into sadness. She uses these uncanny voids to explore empowerment at the intersection between two worlds. This is as much a signature style as an autobiographical rendering of her heritage as she traverses the two spaces at ease but noting the complexity of not belonging wholly to either.
Having previously shared lineups with the likes of Objekt, Mechatok, Rui Ho and Quest?onmarc, Happy New Tears has most recently scored a spatial installation for the 2021 Athens Biennale. She is also affiliated with the Berlin collective No Shade; a collective, club night and DJ training program for aspiring female, non-binary and trans artists.
