Armenian pianist and composer Hayk Melikyan is recognized as a versatile and imaginative interpreter of 20th-century and contemporary music, praised by BBC Music Magazine as “a Musical Hero” for his promotion of contemporary music. He began piano at six with Irina Grishinskaya, then studied with Professor Alexander Gurgenov at the Yerevan Komitas Conservatory, alongside composition with Vardan Adjemian. His international debut came at Rome’s Concerto di Concerti festival (2000), and he has since performed across Europe, Asia, and the Americas on stages including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Geneva’s Victoria Hall, Lisbon’s Gulbenkian Auditorium, and Athens Megaron. A laureate of international competitions (Concours d’Orléans, Ibla Grand Prize, Premio Valentino Bucchi, Yvar Mikhashoff Trust), Melikyan has received the Komitas Medal (2008), Moscow Composers Union Golden Medal (2012), the title Honored Artist of Armenia (2013), and the Movses Khorenatsi Medal (2025), Armenia’s highest state honour for cultural achievement. His discography spans labels including Naxos, Azure Sky, and Donemus. He founded the concert series 1900+ (2009) and 2000+ (2020). He has collaborated with composers Tigran Mansurian and Krzysztof Penderecki, and with artists such as Edgar Moreau, Carolin Widmann and Kristóf Baráti. As a soloist he performs with the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, Armenian State Symphony and National Philharmonic Orchestras, under conductors including Gergiev, Martin-Etxebarria.
