Mixing elements of Scandinavian Black Metal with the "Gothenburg Sound" of <a href="spotify:playlist:3PczoPm3GB4rjQzYrWEvI1" data-name="MelodicDeathMetal">MelodicDeathMetal</a>, Held In Scorn helped pioneer the Melo-Death/Metalcore movement of the early 2000s. Influenced by such bands as <a href="spotify:artist:2eKbDx0Tbc2EcStEB54E51" data-name="Prayer For Cleansing">Prayer For Cleansing</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:6YXarbjg36ODFPez0PnOlD" data-name="At The Gates">At The Gates</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:221Rd0FvVxMx7eCbWqjiKd" data-name="Satyricon">Satyricon</a>, Guitarist Ray Marquez and vocalist Derrick Scott formed Held In Scorn (HIS) in the Winter of 2002 in Stockton, CA. The early line-up included Marquez, Scott, bassist Phillip Pathoumnorack, guitarist Mike Butler, and drummer Mike Chavez. Butler and Chavez left the project relatively early and were replaced by Matt Young and Hobart Thomas respectively.
HIS cut a 6-song split album with Scott's band Setrip titled “Fight Til Death!: Held In Scorn vs Setrip” in the Fall of 2003 with renowned sound engineer Zack Ohren (<a href="spotify:artist:7GkGdNLPzWw4e6ctwKvI2x" data-name="All Shall Perish">All Shall Perish</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:67ZMMtA88DDO0gTuRrzGjn" data-name="Cattle Decapitation">Cattle Decapitation</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4pFAF1L1tYnJHLe5hgyKuI" data-name="Six Feet Under">Six Feet Under</a>) at Castle Ultimate Studios in Oakland, CA. A 3-track EP followed the Summer of 2004 again with Ohren. Hobart and Ray parted ways with the band and were replaced by drummer Thomas Brouns (<a href="spotify:artist:3Cl7t4udQy6Fp0xlntLHT1" data-name="Gunmetal Grey">Gunmetal Grey</a>) and guitarist Jason Miguel. The band dropped another 4 tracks, this time with Castle Ultimate’s Aaron Hellam (<a href="spotify:artist:4z2rZXnFuTCl75Vpb26Eg0" data-name="First Blood">First Blood</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4ULLVhwYkyOqpVxe0Asbtt" data-name="Loma Prieta">Loma Prieta</a>) at the board.
HIS disbanded in 2006, distributing the Castle Ultimate sessions on Bandcamp in 2012. In the Spring of 2018, the session tracks were remastered by HIS guitarist Matt Young at his The Press Recording Studio. HIS released the Rusted Gates EP June 2018 and their debut full-length followed Halloween 2018.
