Her Space Holiday is the solo project of Marc Bianchi, one that since its inception in 1996 has fused elements of bedroom pop, electronic production, and sad-hearted but dreamy indie rock songwriting. The project was prolific throughout its initial phase, releasing multiple albums, touring often with bands like American Analog Set and Bright Eyes, and crafting remixes for R.E.M., Duster, and many others. Bianchi briefly ended Her Space Holiday in 2011, but returned a few years later with the 2018 EP Gravity. In 2025, Numero Group reissued a 25th Anniversary edition of Her Space Holiday’s standout 2000 album Home Is Where You Hang Yourself, with new bonus material and remixes.
Bianchi grew up in San Mateo, California, and was involved with the California emo/hardcore scene in his young adulthood, playing in the bands Indian Summer, Mohinder, and Calm. After his time in those bands ended around 1996, Bianchi was focused on running his label AudioInformationPhenomena, while making music as Her Space Holiday privately. He was reluctant to share any of his recordings, but released the first Her Space Holiday single “Audio Astronomy” in 1997. His output was steady from there, with multiple singles and split releases with Flowchart and Urban Legends before 1999 saw the release of a two-volume double album, The Astronauts Are Sleeping, Vol. 1 and 2. In 2000, their full-length album Home Is Where You Hang Yourself captured the height of HSH’s introspective, charmingly lo-fi sound, with bedroom-produced beats and emotionally deflated guitar figures building the foundation for some of the project’s best songs. In 2000, a split single with Bright Eyes was also released, as were two EPs, Something Blue and Silent Films. Her Space Holiday remained prolific throughout the next decade, touring often and releasing albums like 2001’s Manic Expressive, 2003’s The Young Machines, and 2005’s The Past Presents the Future. Remixes were a large part of Her Space Holiday’s currency in this phase, and along with creating remixes for R.E.M., Elastica, Kool Keith, and others, his songs received remix treatment from Stereolab, Super Furry Animals, Matmos, and many other of his indie-electronic peers. With 2008 LP XOXO, Panda and the New Kid Revival, the project took a stylistic shift from solo bedroom electronica to a live band instrumentation, with Bianchi being joined by members of American Analog Set and Lymbyc Systym. In 2011, a self-titled album was released along with the announcement that this would be the final offering from Her Space Holiday. This hiatus was somewhat short-lived, and six years later Bianchi reactivated the project, releasing a new EP entitled Gravity in 2018.
