HERBERT BARTMANN,
born in 1958 in Norden, Germany, started to teach himself various instruments when still in his childhood. He followed this by studying European musical traditions, especially those of the bagpipes. At the same time he made a name for himself with songs in Low German. Early on, he questioned genre boundaries and the roles assigned to the instruments, and developed his own forms of expression. More recently this was increasingly influenced by improvised and contemporary classical music. He lives as a freelance musician in Oldenburg/Germany, plays in various musical groups and as a soloist. He also gives lessons and workshops.
