Jason Jones and Jesse Crowley met in 2008 when they were both recruited by a mutual friend to play in a pop-rock cover band. Soon, the pair discovered that they share a mutual love for home recording and producing. They decided to collaborate on some original holiday songs that Crowley had been working on. The following winter, Herod the Fink was born with the release of a self-titled EP. The pair have continued to create music – both as Herod the Fink and as their non-holiday alter-ego Tiny Boats.
The curious band name is derived from one of Crowley's earliest Christmas memories. Each year, one of his dear family friends constructed an elaborate, miniature model of the town of Bethlehem. There were delightful details throughout the diorama, including a humorous bit of graffiti scratched on one of the village walls. In defiance of the evil tetrarch, the words simply read "Herod is a fink."
