Melboune artist HEXRR creates gothic, synth-laden dance punk which features a dark, emotionally charged aura against energetic drum machines, dreamy synthesizers and heavily distorted, layered walls of bass guitar.
After years of performing in a variety of bands such as Uzumaki, Shiva and Ashbel – Jarvis Halfpenny decided to form HEXRR as an attempt at bringing the passionate energy of a full band to a solo project, creating danceable tracks without compromising the punk edge that made previous bands so notorious. Hexrr combines two major musical influences; the raw, echoing warehouse crust absorbed during their time in Melbourne’s DIY punk scene, and a genuine love for bubbly, dreamy synth pop. This makes for a unique sound - equally inspired by local post-punk oddities such as Masses, Vacuum and Mollusc and the dance pop sensibilities of CHVRCHES, Alice Glass and MGMT.
HEXRR's debut track ‘Fracture’ may at first seem guitar driven, but is instead performed entirely using heavily effected, layered bass to create strange timbres, contrasted by luscious FM synths provided by the Elektron Digitone. Fracture serves as the perfect introduction to the dreamy, distant and gothic alternative pop sound of HEXRR.
