“There's only 3 of them, but it sounds humongous"
(BBC Radio 3 - Jazz Now)
Hippo thrives in the hinterland between jazz and electronica. Bursting with buoyant melodies and the adrenal energy of a band stretching their shows to the edge of possibility, the trio continues to make a colossal sound far beyond what their three-piece stature should permit.
Their 2018 debut caught the ears of the UK Jazz community, followed by 2019’s ‘Binary Diet’ EP. With praise coming from across the leftfield, including approval on WorldwideFM and the BBC, they took their music to acclaimed performances at The London Jazz Festival and Ronnie Scott’s.
Whilst the world ground to a halt Hippo got to work, with late night jams over zoom birthing a beefy new album ‘New Normal’, set for release in Spring 2023. The phrase new normal emerged at the start of the global pandemic, with the realisation that things would never be as they were before. Not just in global health, but in the political rhetoric, environmental demise, and across borders and international relations. A new normal also brings the promise of hope - we may not return to as we once were, but perhaps we can make changes for the better…
‘New Normal’ examines the world through this lens, and features heavy collaborations, earnest melodies and a tangle of enticing grooves, stirred into the trio’s bubbling froth of textures and tones.
Saxophones, synthesisers and drums go in, Hippo comes out.
