HOWEVEVER is Perth-based songwriter/producer, Isaac Lee. The project began in 2020 with the A Healthy Fear of Everything and Leaning From The Steep Slope in 2021, showcasing Isaac's songwriting and production chops respectively. In 2023 Isaac released his second full length effort, Phenakistoscope, to international acclaim, "Combining all manner of bubbling, driving synths and obscure samples with understated drum machines and Lee’s soaring pop vocals" (Pilerats). Later that year, he went on to win the coveted APRA AMCOS JP Partnership, receiving a grant as well as mentorship from Josh Pyke.
HOWEVEVER's latest run of singles sees Lee return to a focus on songwriting. Unique, left-of-centre lyricism guides each track, surrounded by barebones synths and acoustic guitar melodies that at times threaten to make a push for centre stage. They come from his third album, By The Time You Emerge, due mid 2025.
HOWEVEVER is a typo. Pronounce it whichever way feels comfortable to you. Spell it with as many or few ‘EV’s as you wish. Remove the ‘H’ if you’re that way inclined. HOWEVEVER as a project is about the artistic freedom that comes with not taking yourself too seriously. Lyrics like Neil Finn; textures like Animal Collective; melodies like Alex G; but sometimes it just comes out sounding like Train. And that’s ok :)
