HOWRAH...written in all caps, know how to make an impact. This is evident from the band’s new, third album “Ends And Means”. The sound is unmistakably HOWRAH, but they have grown since previous album “Bliss” (2021). The sound is more coherent and fuller, without losing its edge. The songs are lengthier, heavier and at a higher pace. Working on a consistent level, they deliver another set of powerful blows .
It feels like HOWRAH has always been around… Firmly anchored in Dutch underground, with a bloodline from bands as Zoppo, The Howl Ensemble, seesaw and Space Siren, they took this DNA when they formed HOWRAH in 2016. Adapting previous acts but also influences trom The Cure, Sonic Youth, Blonde Redhead and Sebadoh into a idiosyncratic, contrary sound.
HOWRAH has become closer due to their permanent composition. This is the first album all members worked on and recorded from start to finish. However, their intentions; dissonant guitar music, kept in check by tight bass and drums, are no different than on debut “Self_Serving Strategies” (2018). Combining trademark, emotionally charged vocals with song, building a pleasantly melancholic vibe.
The band still hails from the Katzwijm Studio in Voorhout, ran by Ineke Duivenvoorde, where label mates Neighbors Burning Neighbors and Tramhaus also recorded. Like on the previous album, “Ends And Means” was recorded in Amsterdam's Schenk Studio with Jan Schenk.
