At once summery and dark, the world of Hugo z is one of washy crescendos and moody undertones. Growing from a DIY album recorded by lead singer Hugo Douglas-Deane in his student dorm, the band morphed into a four piece line-up that quickly built up a reputation for raucous sets and improvised jams in their home city of Norwich, playing festivals and gigging across the country.
The sea is one of the regular characters in the band’s music, while regular psychedelic tangents add an edge to some of the straighter indie rock tracks.
“I am really getting into their summery sound... I close my eyes and imagine myself in a bar in Newquay, watching the sun go down, and realise that, if I was, this is exactly what I would want to be listening to.” – David Auckland, Outline Magazine
“I appreciate the energy. Don’t often get as many men’s bands who know how to move. Dancing is infectious. A good infection.” Aimee M, Void Notes
