soundtrack for movies in my head – music in times of a pandemic
Mental health. Modern-day anxieties. Are we stressed yet?
I AM A DUO's first concept album "soundtrack for movies in my head", takes Mental Health as the main theme, with each song representing different manifestations of how we are affected. COVID-19, recession, fake news, BLM, police brutality, polarization. Social media addiction, online bullying, cancel culture, opioid crisis. Climate change, global politics, religious terrorism… ARE. WE. STRESSED. YET?
The inspiration came in the worst possible way: by feeling it.
"A little subconsciously, composing took the format of my own week-cycles during the lockdowns: the out-of-hand anxiety of a Monday and ruthless “need to produce” (“Status: Anxiety”), followed by a mid-week of self-pity and procrastination due to imposter syndrome feelings (“Foetal Position”, “Apathy Inertia”, Dellusion/Daydream"), the manic “self-medicated” escapes of the weekends (“State of Euphoria” and "moodselector")… With little sprinkles of self-worth and paranoia (“Phantoms”)."
The result of multiple musical personalities and the pot of stirring anxieties and modern-day overexposure has unleashed Retro Futuristic and Lo-Fi aesthetics. Dark electronica tunes - aggressive yet sometimes tender and vulnerable, as well as soundtracks for the real and imaginary. No need for boundaries. Does it have bass? Beats? Is it unexpected or a bit weird? Then we like it.
