IDKMir —real name Tamir Robertson—grew up in the Uptown section of Philadelphia before moving to Northeast Philadelphia due to gentrification in his old neighborhood. Robertson parlayed his childhood fondness for all sports into becoming, by his senior year, one of the top defensive backs in the state of Pennsylvania. His first meaningful exposure to hip-hop came from the first time he heard Drake’s album, Take Care.
In the summer of 2018, after losing his passion for football, Robertson dropped out of ASA Junior College in Brooklyn, NY and returned to his hometown of Philadelphia where he met his manager, Muhammad Abdul-Hadi. Muhammad convinced Robertson that although he was no longer seeking stardom as an NFL player, he should consider taking rap seriously as a career. Drawing off inspiration of the swagger and wordplay of one of his favorite rappers, Lil Wayne, Robertson began to get into the studio and professionally record the songs he’d been writing.
By the time the 2019 ball dropped in Times Square, Robertson had recorded 12 succinct and hyper-personal songs that made up his debut album, CHANGES. Robertson looked at CHANGES to not only reflect his metamorphous from a star football player to a star rapper, but to also highlight his refusal to be put in a box; he can make music that crosses all genres, yet still sounds in synch when played concurrently. IDKMir’s debut album, CHANGES, was released in February 2019 on The Life Music Group / EMPIRE Records.
