I wrote "hurt" over three years ago and have since performed it more times than I can count.
I have cried through it, yelled it, whispered it, and stopped performances of it halfway through because I just couldn't sing it anymore.
I have recorded and re-recorded and scrapped it and started over so many times that it is difficult for me to believe I am finally releasing it.
This song started as my first attempt at claiming my own voice and story after being manipulated, violated, shut down, and told what I should think and feel, and it has since grown from a cry of pain to a declaration of power.
"Hurt people hurt people."
Obviously.
We understand that the vast majority of perpetrators were once themselves victims. This understanding is not a justification to continue creating more victims.
"Hurt people hurt people," unless we hold one another accountable and make active efforts to heal.
"Hurt people" are the keys to deciding whether or not it happens again-- if we will continue to inflict hurt on those around us because it is what we know, or if we will choose something different.
Until something changes, I will continue to speak.
Stupid games, stupid prizes.
Do better.
