J Smith returns with his most vulnerable and transformative work yet. ‘I Stood There Naked...’, out October 24th, is an album about his daughter — and the profound change her presence has had on him. Where his debut chronicled the ache of absence, this follow-up embraces the healing that followed: the quiet joy, the overwhelming love, and the raw reckoning with fatherhood.
His debut album, ‘(...) And you chose not to laugh’ (2021), was hailed as “fearlessly honest” and “essential listening” [Hot Press, Irish Times], exploring themes of grief, identity, and longing. Before that, James spent 14 years fronting indie rock outfit Gypsies on the Autobahn and making electronic music as YURN. But it’s under J Smith that he’s found the space to speak plainly, to create with clarity, and to reflect the life he leads today.
That life — a shared home with his wife, their daughter, and close friends Char and Max Zaska — became briefly famous when media branded it a modern-day commune. But beyond the headlines, it’s a story of chosen family, creative connection, and domestic beauty, captured on his 2021 project Baby Farm.
Learning piano at 5 and eventually mastering guitar, songwriting, and production, J Smith treats music not as performance, but as expression — a means of mapping the deepest parts of himself. With ‘I Stood There Naked...’, he invites listeners into his most intimate transformation yet: from pain to peace, from distance to fatherhood, from man to mirror.
