Jahir is a duo connecting two very separate worlds together. Jahir, meaning "bass" in Arabic, aims to connect the amazing worlds of traditional instruments from the Middle East and North Africa together with the synthetic modern West. Each song we create should tell a story from a new perspective that we feel has not yet been explored. Dutch producer and engineer Frank de Jong got together with vocalist and writer Sheyma back in 2016. It turned out that even though we had not yet met, our shared mission statement in music dated back far beyond our first meeting.
Everything in our music is about combining two opposites. The organic and synthetic, the traditional and the modern, the west and the east, the acoustic and the electric. We believe there can be a extremely fine and fragile balance between these extremely contrasting elements. Studying exotic scales, diving into ancient poetry, and carefully glueing together each note of each instrument results into a very gratifying process that we are now finally ready to share.
