Alto & Soprano saxophonist Jaleel Shaw is the winner of the Rising Star Alto
Saxophone category in the 2014 Downbeat Critics Polls. He is not only a bandleader,
but also is a member of the Roy Haynes Quartet and Tom Harrell’s “Colors Of A Dream” band. He has also performed and/or tour with Christian Mcbride, Jason Moran, Stefon Harris, Roy Hargrove, Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Jimmy Cobb the Mingus Big Band, and more.
Originally from Philadelphia, PA - Shaw attended the Berklee College of Music, where he received a dual major degree in Music Education and Performance. From there, he went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, where he gained a masters degree in Jazz Performance.
Jaleel has three albums as a leader. - “Perspective”, “Optimism”, and “The Soundtrack Of Things To Come”. The latter two, were released on Shaw’s on label - Changu Records, which he started in 2008. All three records were met with rave reviews from publications that include the New York Times, All About Jazz, Jazzwise, and the New York City Jazz report. Jaleel has also received numerous rewards, nominations and grants, including multiple Ascap Young Jazz Composer awards, a mention in Jazztimes Magazine’s 2011 Readers Poll for Alto Saxophonist of the Year, and nomination for Up & Coming Jazz Artist of the Year by the Jazz Journalist Association.
