James Joys was a pseudonym of Irish composer Jamie Thompson. He now works under the name <a href="spotify:artist:4PQsRW5gSsWj2nSmy92Ks9" data-name="Adjunct Ensemble">Adjunct Ensemble</a>. His work sits in the spaces between the club and the concert hall, and between the concrète and the kinetic. His oeuvre is a kaleidoscopic collection that ranges from lo-fi sampler collage, deep underwater techno, glitching, experimental electronica, dance, ambient soundscapes, electroacoustic music, to modern choral music. Joys is also one third of dark swooners <a href="spotify:artist:0a4ab2nrDrwG5vqRYCAqSY" data-name="Ex-Isles">Ex-Isles</a> with Pete Devlin. Their album <a href="spotify:album:4RqIUT64Z4aC4ZIls2FF8e" data-name="Luxury Mass">Luxury Mass</a>, produced by Joys, was released in 2018 to critical acclaim.
After releasing <a href="spotify:album:5hAkDmCZmoe9DJXszs8WXj" data-name="Canon Fodder">Canon Fodder</a> and <a href="spotify:album:1F0lcpNuzqvS0aSpWH4rY4" data-name="Glyphic Bloom">Glyphic Bloom</a> in 2012, which was released as a site specific art installation in Newcastle upon Tyne called Surrogate City, Jamie took a few years off to teach, only releasing an EP of submarine techno <a href="spotify:album:6fOnrQkRzmt9i9jcXo0qwa" data-name="Future Pixel">Future Pixel</a> in 2014. On his return to Ireland in 2016 he began work on an album of electroacoustic rave entropy called <a href="spotify:album:1y14oumhMU9FN0Own0uOnl" data-name="Super Tidal">Super Tidal</a> that was released in October 2018, and a choral work for choir, soloist, and electronics called A Constellation Of Bargained Parts which was performed in October 2018 by Codetta. James also released a standalone single of technicolour techno called <a href="spotify:album:3FV2SxU9ST9lQ4MalCDCIz" data-name="Fugitive Wound">Fugitive Wound</a> in January 2019.
