The tradition of Scottish bagpiping continues to be expanded by the playing of Kitchener, Ontario-born James McGillivray. The recipient of gold medals from Oban and Inverness, Scotland, McGillivray has won five North American championships with his expressive playing. Piper & Drummer magazine called McGillivray one of the best all-round pipers, ever. Learning to play the bagpipes in 1966, McGillivray competed professionally within six years. He won his second North American championship with the Guelph Pipe Band in 1981 and three championships during the four years (1988-1992) that he played with the 78th Fraser Highlanders. McGillivray has continued to share his musical knowledge with anyone willing to learn. In 1988, he released an instructional book/CD, Rhythmic Fingerwork.
