Working out of a bedroom studio stuffed with odds, ends, and in-betweens, Atlanta-based musician Janis Lago has developed an idiosyncratic, bombastic niche as an electronic producer. From simple beginnings twiddling knobs on budget synthesizers and editing found sounds in Audacity around 2018, she has broadened her horizons to encompass fractured bass music, expansive and otherworldly kosmische electronica, and glitched-out queer pop, among many other directions.
Yet no matter where Lago goes, the results are both imposingly massive in their intense, overdetailed production and intimately earnest in the starkness of their personal themes and narratives. Through a rapid, prolific workflow built around industrial sound design and complex digital synthesis, she realizes these narratives and continuously creates what Esoteros has called "a vision so unresolved as to seem potentially inexhaustible.”
