Jason Long is a country, rock, and folk musician from Roanoke, Virginia. He is the former frontman for <a href="spotify:artist:5rUpnZzNj61wyW3ofTNAGO" data-name="The Dirt Road Travelers">The Dirt Road Travelers</a>. A native Virginian, Long hails from Halifax County and attended Longwood University in Farmville.
DRT disbanded in 2013 (at which point two members - bassist Ed McGee and guitarist Waylon Hatchett - went on to work with <a href="spotify:artist:4eYE8Z6cfEHEdG22lTyucP" data-name="Morgan Wade">Morgan Wade</a> during the early stages of her career). Jason self-produced his solo debut, <a href="spotify:album:3ycEus0rxZOUQ8Xm2IAeK3" data-name="Exit Wounds">Exit Wounds</a>, in 2015, and then took a pause from music. Long returned to playing live in 2019 and released <a href="spotify:track:4w9H4WD4YvtAHd1DxKVfLR" data-name="Old Man Yelling at His TV">Old Man Yelling at His TV</a>, his first new music in 7 years, in April 2022. <a href="spotify:album:4VYhXLFZwcny4gc3VmgBUH" data-name="The Summer 2022 EP">The Summer 2022 EP</a> arrived in August 2022 featuring 6 new original songs. Jason followed that up with <a href="spotify:album:3ViTLS0M9poja45JLjuzkB" data-name="Other People's Children: The Covers EP">Other People's Children: The Covers EP</a> in June 2023 which featured tunes from some of Long's favorite songwriters, including Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Dolly Parton, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
By day, Long serves as a social studies teacher for Roanoke County Public Schools where he frequently uses music to add to his U.S. history lessons. He was named one of 8 Super Teachers by the VA Lottery in 2016. In 2023, Long became the first winner of the WSLS Educator Impact Award, was named Woodrow Wilson Middle School Teacher of the Year, and was named runner-up for the Roanoke City Public Schools Teacher of the Year award.
