Hi, I’m JASS YANG. When I was 16, I didn’t really know what music was, yet I somehow ended up signing with a major label and spent a decade as a manufactured teen idol playing pretend rock. It wasn’t until I fled Taiwan and moved to the UK on my own that I realized music could be a way to dive deeper into myself.
I come from a rural farming family in Taiwan. My parents, like their ancestors going back three generations, were tenant farmers. Their fear of poverty and relentless drive to survive runs deep in my blood. Even faith in our household sometimes felt like a transactional deal with the gods—comfort in exchange for offerings—rather than a path to inner peace.
In London, I encountered a world of stark contrasts: the glamorous excess of a capitalist metropolis and the intoxicating “don’t-give-a-damn” vibe of underground parties. Inspired by these clashes, I started creating dark electronic dance music infused with the sounds of Taiwanese temple rituals and traditional instruments. It’s my way of telling my parents, who always wanted me to become a doctor: “Look, I’m honouring the gods, praying for our family’s health, safety, and wealth with my music >.^ ”
If you’re curious about what cultural collision sounds like, what the music of a washed-up idol reinventing himself feels like, or what happens when an outsider stumbles into the grand banquet of life, hit play on one of my tracks. I’d love to hear what you discover in the noise.
