For her debut indie folk EP, Happiness Was Here, poet and novelist turned songwriter Jen Manske Fenske pulled together an all-woman team (plus one man): GRAMMY-nominated mixing engineer Jennifer Nulsen; mastering engineer Bobbi Giel (from Nashville’s Welcome to 1979); producer Lindsay Brazell (NSAI chapter coordinator); and percussionist Wesley Strasser (Greenville Symphony Orchestra).
South Carolina-based Manske Fenske has cooked up some unique lemonade out of lemons by refashioning her rejected poetry into indie folk steeped in southern imagery, memorable melodies, and literary-infused lyrics.
Three singles from Happiness Was Here have been played on Gutsy Radio. Manske Fenske’s YouTube channel has garnered nearly 50,000 views of her performances and videos chatting about her “failed” poetry. She has received grant support from the South Carolina Arts Commission and the Metropolitan Arts Council.
