Jiants are the Toronto-based group led by former pro skateboarder Jesse Landen, hailed by Paste as “a band to watch" and NOW Magazine for their “fuzzed-out sounds that will transport you back to the best of ’90s indie-rock.” Injecting sundazed hooks with lingering melancholy, the quartet describe their latest release, the Wait Here EP, as a concept-driven collection of songs about feeling stuck in the same place for too long.
Rather than giving into these relatable frustrations, Jiants used their available time in 2020 to create densely layered recordings with producer Gavin Gardner of The Wooden Sky. The final flourishes were added by in-demand jazz musician Drew Jurecka (The Weather Station, Dua Lipa, Donovan Woods), whose string arrangements on first single “Some Kind of Loser” give the song a swelling orchestral pop grandeur. This contrasts its humorously self-deprecating lyrics, highlighting Landen’s epiphanies about his musical motivations after a decade of struggling with traditional notions of success.
