Jim Godfrey is a pianist, composer, producer and sound designer based in the South West of England. Jim trained at the Berkeley Jazzschool in California, and has an MA Distinction in Sound Production. A multi-instrumentalist, his music draws on decades of live playing, incorporating a range of influences including jazz, electronica, classical, indie, techno and trance.
His first album <a href="spotify:album:1i2ZZ3UV8eu6frYJAQr61F" data-name="San Francisco">San Francisco</a>, inspired by 5 years living and studying in Northern California, is an eclectic aural exploration of the Bay Area, from the mellow, sun-drenched fog of <a href="spotify:track:5PiFqBEUb4x2rEYvsDJvPy" data-name="Golden Gate">Golden Gate</a> to the dark, electro throb of <a href="spotify:track:0Esui9UfeqQbdNHoRUx2PR" data-name="Route 101">Route 101</a>. In 2023 his work took a more experimental turn with the release of the semi-improvised <a href="spotify:album:4yDJiDE1p8lodbVAWmhX7A" data-name="Deconstructed Piano works vol 1">Deconstructed Piano works vol 1</a>, a collaboration with Bristol sound artist Ben Hamid, creating two evolving long-form piano pieces.
In summer 2023 he released two more piano-led works, returning to the theme of place, and inspired by his time in Japan earlier that year. <a href="spotify:album:39yO1r4BwxVgcM9nuwMuoZ" data-name="The Kyoto Laughing Party EP">The Kyoto Laughing Party EP</a> and <a href="spotify:album:2HzFlpn6R43H7ZMcFSTrkX" data-name="The Kyoto Laughing Party EP2">The Kyoto Laughing Party EP2</a> contain eight simple pieces, blending felt pianos with analogue synths and Japanese field recordings to create a beautiful and evocative soundscape.
His most recent release, <a href="spotify:track:2LS9UWpaW0hxn5mQQvd4jn" data-name="The Abominatron">The Abominatron</a>, takes him back to the MOOG-heavy electro vibes of his early work, sampling the voice of synth pioneer Bob Moog in the EPs eponymous title track.
