Jimi Light is a singer-songwriter from Rio. In his debut solo album, The Season of Magical Thinking, he presents 12 confessional songs about two main themes: the ending of a marriage and the process of grieving after a tragic loss.
The backbone that sustains the lyrics, all written wearing his heart on the sleeve, is the intricate acoustic guitar playing influenced by 60's American and British folk, as shown in the multiple open tunings heard throughout the album.
A full band sound, nonetheless, is also found in tracks such as the harrisonesque ballad The Streets of Copacabana, and Until Spring — dedicated to American novelist John Fante —, in which Jimi Light is accompanied by the singer Maranda.
It is no coincidence that the title of the album comes from Joan Didion's memoir The Year of Magical Thinking, a book that helped the artist to cope with the loss of one of his older brothers. The main way Jimi found to deal with the deep sensation of mourning was writing songs like Sweet Brother, Green Waters and The Void, The Sea, which features Rubel, one of Brazil's most praised songwriters today, who sings the only part in Portuguese on the album.
The cover art, developed by Bruno Galliez, was inspired by a Fernando Lemos photo. It shows a view from a window made of dark water, depicting the imagery of the sea as a place that both gives and takes life, a theme profoundly explored by Bahia's legendary singer Dorival Caymmi, one of Jimi's main sources of inspiration.
