JOESTONE consists of the musician brothers Markus (24) og Daniel Gundersen (28) from Skien, Norway. Their father and namesake, Jostein, is a gospel choir leader and pianist, and has made sure the gospel sound is found in the very backbone of JOESTONE. The brothers began playing the drums and bass early, before they got into music production. Drawing inspiration from various genres and newer production methods, Daniel and Markus have developed their expression with JOESTONE, moving away from their musical legacy - thereof the title of their debut album: Legacy. Their sources of inspiration include Stevie Wonder, Anderson .Paak, J Dilla, and Robert Glasper.
The productions have a wide range of genres, including everything from funk and jazz, to soul and R&B. The duo fuses digital and analog sounds and samples. Several instruments are recorded live in studio, like Daniel’s drums. “Our incentive is to exclusively create music we think is cool”, the brothers say. “We’re interested in a sound that isn’t as polished as a lot of Norwegian hip hop and urban-music is today. We like music that emerges through an organic process, not intentionally customised to the radio format.”
