This particular John Davis is a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who was half of the indie rock duo Folk Implosion from 1993-2000. His solo albums from that period included Pure Night, Leave Home and Blue Mountains, released via the Shrimper and Communion labels. After quitting public recording and performing during the aughts he returned with the solo double LP Spare Parts on Shrimper in 2013, which was co-produced with Simon Joyner. After moving from Massachusetts to North Carolina, Davis released the cassette We'll Teach Them How To Privatize via Unread Records in 2015, an extended instrumental version of a single song from a longer work in progress. The full album was released in the fall of 2017 under the title El Pulpo. It was recorded with producer Scott Solter and a rotating cast of local musicians that now go by the name John Davis & the Cicadas. A follow up from the group is expected in 2019. Davis is also an educator, union organizer and political activist associated with the Durham Association of Educators, the Durham People's Alliance, and Organize 2020.
