I started learning piano when I was five years old, but at the age of 13 I was captivated by bands like the Shadows, Free, Cream and Hendrix, and spent all my spare time with a Tandberg reel-to-reel machine trying to play along with my little guitar.
Eventually I gravitated to a Hofner President and then to a cream Telecaster, which was like gold at the time. I joined bands in Hull and gigged a lot around that area until I finished university in 1973. During the next ten years I went back to the piano, doing my Grade 8 and then an LRAM in piano teaching.
But the 1980s was all Hobson & Lees after I met Howard through the Bollington Baby-Sitting Circle. We bought guitars from Rog Bucknall at Fylde Guitars and they became a bit of a trademark as we went from a spot at the local pub to dozens of gigs round the country and many radio appearances with a bit of TV as well.
In the late 90s I moved down south for work and recorded two albums, Vertical Stride and Wireless, on my very own Akai DR4D. Since then I've done more than a dozen library albums, for 9 Lives Music, and for The Scoring House with drummer/percussionist Chris Baron.
My latest solo library album is Guitar Swing 3, written and recorded during the 2020 lockdown. I've also released Greatest Hits, a collection of some favourite tracks I've written.
Hot off the press at January 2021 are two EPs: Elegant Paris and Evocative Patterns! For further details check out my updated web site www.johnhobson.com.
