I was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada some 69 years ago. During my youth, I attended the St. Sava Church in Toronto. I went to Sunday School as a little boy, served in the altar during Holy Liturgy, danced with the Oplenac folklore group for many years, played cello in the Church Tamburitza Orchestra, sang in the junior choir, and finally joined the St. Sava Choir at the age of 15. During this general period, I, along with Milan Sanader, my brother Michael, and Miles Obradovich, formed Lika Orchestra who entertained guests at many church, weddings, and choir functions, and do so to this day.
Being part of Lika Orchestra since its inception in 1967 provided me with a great opportunity to become proficient at the accordion (after 10+ years of lessons), and to gain an appreciation for a variety of Serbian music. All these experiences with Lika, plus choral experiences have molded my musical sensibilities.
In 2009, I released my first recording/CD “New Horizons/Novi Vidici” under the name “John Jovan Lukich and Friends”. Indeed, I had lots of help from a number of talented people including some family members. These were mostly cover songs and one original “Oprosti”. It was a very satisfying project to record and the music recorded has held up well till this day.
Once COVID hit, I like so many, found myself sequestered at home having an abundance of time on my hands. So, I decided to do some more recording. I am currently in the process of releasing this music plus many more.
