John Nau, a native of San Diego, began his professional career as a musician with the San Diego Repertory Theater and Max Roach. After moving to Los Angeles in his twenties, he became active as a studio musician and band leader. John has performed on multi-platinum records and toured globally as a keyboardist for notable bands such as Hootie and the Blowfish, James Blunt, and Belinda Carlisle. He has also found success with his own groups, including Zoo People, Digital Monk, and The Januaries.

In 1995, John debuted one of the earliest albums on Posi-Tone Records, called Undercurrents. He reunites with the label for his most recent work, the album Four Corners (2024), marking the beginning of the label's 30-year anniversary celebration.

In 2001, John helped establish Beacon Street Studios in Venice, California, occupying a space that once belonged to Joni Mitchell. At this studio, he has been involved in producing and co-writing music for numerous commercials. He has also created scores for several major films, such as The House, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, Casa de mi Padre, and Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, along with contributions to television shows, including the recent Jury Duty. John has collaborated on songs with Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, and Kristin Wiig for various films. In 2014, he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for the mini-series The Spoils of Babylon.
