John Niel first caught the spotlight as one of the 10 participants in the Just Inspired Live Acoustic Sessions project hosted by Just Music in 2017, where his unmistakable talent and charisma captivated audiences. The following year, he made an unforgettable debut with Heart Of Mine, a hugely popular single that secured multiple adds across South African radio. He quickly followed up with Trouble, using the momentum and exposure to refine his songwriting and develop his signature sound.

The result of this dedication is Long Time Coming, John’s debut album, produced by two-time SAMA nominee Matthew Fink. Brimming with classic pop hooks, top-tier production, and immaculate songwriting, the album perfectly balances timeless pop sensibilities with a maturity beyond his years. Standout tracks include the effervescent The Good Ones, future classics Red Dress and I Won’t Remember, the Motown-infused Around Town, and the dub-styled Somewhere Chill. Niel is at his most compelling on Used To Have It All and Hopelessly Devoted—his powerful rendition of the Olivia Newton-John smash—both serving as undeniable highlights.
