John Paulson, musician & educator
John Paulson started his musical journey in Rochester, MN playing sax in area rock bands and participating in school music groups. He migrated west and got his B.M and M.M from the University of Utah where he studied jazz with Henry Wolking and later completed his DMA in music education from the University of Washington. He started playing the saxophone at age 10, studied flute and clarinet with members of the Utah Symphony and the L.A. Chamber Orchestra and studied jazz improvisation with Garry Dial in New York. After 35 years of full time teaching, Dr. Paulson now has professor emeritus status at Saint Mary’s University in Winona, MN and teaches jazz studies part time at Winona State University. He has performed internationally with student jazz groups plus freelance work with The Cab Calloway Orchestra, Mel Torme, Andy Williams, Bob Hope, The Temptations, Johnny Mathis, Pioneer Memorial Theatre and The Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City. He has produced six commercial jazz CD's and done 5 Master class CD's for the Saxophone Journal. He’s a member of ASCAP, The American Composers Forum, JEN (the Jazz Educators Network), The River Arts Alliance and is now an official artist endorser of Jody Jazz Sax Mouthpieces and accessories.
