Listen to Jonas’ music and you immediately notice the deft and highly texturized production, listen further and what begins to take shape is a unique style that exists almost entirely in its own lane. “I like to pull from all places, I’m known as the person with the most aggressively eclectic music taste, it can get a bit outrageous sometimes” Jonas recalls.

Born, raised and now studying in Leeds, Jonas set out on his musical path at the tender age of 14 “I started out by just making silly techno tunes on Fruity Loops”. After being shown the ropes by his uncle, another music producer, he started experimenting with different sounds, throwing them up on his SoundCloud and receiving some early support from Majestic Casual in the process. “When I was 16 I wanted to be a tropical house kinda dude”, however this temptation to follow a path well-trodden didn’t last long. After singing in a few indie bands and finding his voice, he added his vocals to productions and pushed them into more experimental realms. Now citing influences such as FKA Twigs, Yung Lean, Sophie and The 1975, Jonas’ sound is a sonic hybrid of different styles, “I guess it’s super agitated internet pop music mixed with grime’s phrasing and phonetics.”

‘Better Than This’, a debut of his new sound as Jonas LR, is a deeply personal, lo-fi record that grapples with the idea of death, “it’s recognising the ephemerality of life and looking at your own mortality.”
