JP Payton (Freight) celebrates the release of 12 new acoustic songs entitled MTN Blue. Recorded in a handful of sessions by Wil Russell @ Electric Wilburland over the course of 2023 and early 2024, and mixed at Midline Studios, MTN Blue is a songwriter's album. Performed live with scant overdubs, Payton emotes with a subtle vulnerability and rhythmic optimism that draws the listener close with each spin. Drawing upon decades of songcraft, MTN BLUE catches a songsmith at the apex of his game. In both storytelling and musicality, MTN BLUE is a rich experience, and makes a bold statement in the wider Americana/Roots Music pantheon. Payton humbly explains "The result is very much me, and that's what I set out to do. Capturing these songs at their most basic level.``
The songs that arise from MTN Blue, are chock full of experience, heartache and hope, and performed with an original yet familiar quality. While never shying from the harsh realities of the human condition, and the suffering that often befalls, Payton offers a calm understanding that everything is gonna be ok. Drawing comparisons to songwriting heavy weights such as John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Jason Molina, and delivered with a lilting baritone voice, Payton turns phrases with a depth shared by many of his heroes. Delving into the nuances of love and loss, life and death, struggle and survival, Payton displays a keen and observant eye to the American experience around and within.
