Steeped in the tradition of family band Bluegrass and swayed by modern country’s catchy hooks, Julia Vos is one of Alberta’s most compelling emergent voices.
Taking the scene by storm in 2016 with a victory as the ‘Nashville North Star’ winner at the Calgary Stampede, Vos quickly perked the ears of local radio with her debut single ‘Whispers’ (2017), an impressive independent launch that showcased her honeyed vocals and left a lasting impression on listeners.
Akin to early Faith Hill and Lee Ann Womack, Vos displays an undeniable poignant quality in her approach and exceptional vocal tone. With her second single ‘Stay’ (2019), both songwriting and production quality exhibited substantial growth, as did her live performance opportunities - now having shared the stage with greats among Gord Bamford, Paul Brandt, Tebey and Dan Davidson. She has graced stages at awards and festivals alike, including the CCMA’s, Boots & Hearts, Big Valley Jamboree and The Calgary Stampede.
With a handful of catchy, hook-filled numbers, Vos waded into deeper waters with the stunning ‘Jude’ (2023), a gentle offering for parents who’ve lost children or had trouble conceiving. To deliver heavy messages with such delicacy is no easy feat, Vos did a remarkable job and further cemented her strength as a songwriter. The song also earned her multiple nominations at this year’s Country Music Alberta Award.
Be sure to listen to her new heart felt single ‘Somebody’ on September 13th.
