If the shadows could laugh, they would inevitably ring with the voice of Julie Hanse. Armed with a unique poetic sensibility and a brilliantly sinister view of the world, she channels both darkness and humor in a way that few others can. Influenced equally by Fiona Apple, Cat Power, and the Rolling Stones, Hanse’s delicate vibrato and tasteful chromaticism lend her music a certain incomparable timelessness.
Born and raised in a suburb of Paris, France, and attending rigorous international school throughout her adolescence, Hanse developed a keen sense of the world from a young age. At 18 years old, she moved to the US to study recorded music and songwriting at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute in Tisch School of the Arts. It was at the end of her time there that she released her debut EP, Moeurs Profanes.
Now, after nearly five years, the acquisition of an abnormally small French bulldog, and a solo move to Los Angeles, Hanse emerges with her newest single, “Egg Whites:” a dark and provocative ode to her classic rock influences, adorned with mesmerizing vocal delay and haunting French counterpoint. With perfect dignity and timelessness, reinforced by the genius of producer Jack Hallenbeck, Hanse raises a challenge - and the classiest possible middle finger - to the world.
