Hailed as “an elegant and bewitching blend of Americana and orchestral pop that sits somewhere between Gillian Welch and Lana Del Rey” by Entertainment Weekly, singer/songwriter Julie Mintz has the vocal presence that draws power from the most subtle expression of feeling. Born and raised in the South Texas city of Corpus Christi, Mintz grew up on the bittersweet balladry of classic country.
On her full-length debut Abandon All Hope of Fruition released on her label Daughters of Cain, the LA-based artist mused on emotional states like longing and romantic confusion, an exploration made all the more enthralling by her luminous take on Gothic Americana. Also a gifted song interpreter, she’s joined forces with her longtime collaborator Moby (whose live band she joined as vocalist and keyboardist in 2011) for such offerings as a spellbinding mashup of Prince’s “Purple Rain” and Gaga’s “Million Reasons."
In her latest undertaking, Mintz widens her range and shares her most urgent and catchy output yet. Her forthcoming single “Done With Boys” is an anti-love song of bright rhythms and breezy melodies, a perfect foil to Mintz’s slyly sung lyrics (“Seen southern charm/Momma tattooed on his arm/But he’ll leave you just as quick he’ll save you”). While the folk country song marks a departure from the ethereal textures of past work like her EP The Thin Veil, Mintz imbues “Done With Boys” with the dreamy sensitivity that’s always permeated her music.
