After the COVID-19 pandemic, it seemed that college for students at the University of Connecticut would never go back to normal. Days once spent kicking back with friends were traded for Zoom calls. But, over the summer of 2021, things were finally starting to look up.
Then-senior Noah Frank (guitar, lead vocals) and then-junior Andrew Debenedictis (bass, vocals) had spent a few years casually writing songs together. With a small discography taking inspiration from bands like Pinegrove, Hippo Campus, and more, the makings of Julie's House were born.
Frank reached out to Matt Kennedy (lead guitar) and fellow acapella friend Peter Busa (drums, vocals) to ask if they would join. After a few rehearsals, without a solid venue, the band debuted at house shows around Connecticut in the fall of 2021. The namesake "Julie's House" was made to honor the first house they played.
The phrase "you just had to be there" became the defining feature of Julie's House shows. Frank, Debenedictis, Kennedy, and Busa would make a point to swap instruments for nearly every song they played. Their originals, "Expectations," "Weight," and "Indigo" became favorites of the class, eventually crowning the group winners of the WHUS 2022 Battle of the Bands competition.
Throughout it all, the friendship between the four allowed for a fluidity to form with their style of play. Though the band has since graduated, the friendship sustains.
"Expectations" releases August 2023.
