The teen idol rage has spread to Mexico through the pop balladry of Kabah. Formed in late-1993, the group, which takes its name from huge Mayan ruins in the Yucatan, became a national sensation when they performed on the popular, Mexican soap opera, Aguejetas De Color, in January 1994. The following summer, they placed first in a competition at the Valores Juveniles Acapulco Festival. They repeated their success the next three years. In February 1996, the group became spokespersons for Fanta/Coca Cola on Mexican television. While their self-titled, self-produced, debut album showed signs of commercial success to come, Kabah broke through with their second album, La Calle De Las Sirenas (The Street of the Mermaids). Released in March 1997, the album sold more than 500,000 copies and received three gold and one platinum albums. Their third album, Esperanto, was released in August 1998; XNE followed two years later. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
