b. Kai Peter Anthon Nielsen, 10 April 1906, Hørsholm, Denmark. After playing other instruments, Ewans chose the alto saxophone in his late teens, later also playing clarinet. He played in several bands and also formed groups under his own leadership including a big band in the mid-20s. Late in the decade he toured Europe, continuing into the 30s as a band leader. He also played with visiting Americans including Benny Carter. His big band, one of the first in Denmark when it was formed in 1927, had continued sporadically over the years and eventually disbanded in 1947. After this Ewans worked mostly outside music, travelling to the USA where, in the early 60s, he was in the restaurant business with Carter in California. After picking up the threads of his musical career in Denmark in the late 60s, he eventually retired to the USA. A good player, Ewans was a potent force behind the development of interest in jazz, and in particular in big band, swing-era-style music in Denmark. His bands were always disciplined, well-rehearsed and enthusiastic outfits, reflecting the best qualities of the leader.
